The impact of digital communications on the economy and the environment

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

I got into new media and web communications to reduce my carbon footprint. It is working well. I can now reach 2 billion people from my cell phone without leaving my office.

Sure the information superhighway infrastructure has an environmental impact, but it is a lot fewer people traveling and lot less physical footprint on the ground than the massive car, train and plane based structures.

I know it is easier to watch then read so here is a link to some good interactive flash and video presentations on the impact of broadband (high speed internet) on the economy and the environment.

Here is another interesting link to a great blog about broadband and climate change.

To help us understand the impact of digital communications on the environment, here is a simple projected money saving calculation from the NextGenWeb Blog.

Telecommuting takes cars off the road and could deliver $3.9 billion in time and fuel cost savings annually, while drastically reducing traffic, greenhouse gas emissions and America’s dependence of foreign oil.

Are you wondering if you are getting the most economic impact from your didgital communications?

If so, call me 518-320-2613, ask for David.

I’ll be happy to help you reduce your carbon footprint while growing profits, enhancing customer service and product development.

Time Union Newspaper leverages Online video to expand. Governor Patterson

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

The sometimes conservative capital of New York, Albany, is catching up to the national trend toward new media communications. Newspapers are now regularly producing online videos.

The Time Union is even using a high quality video sharing platform, Brightcove, which I have written about in previous posts.

Here is one of the videos from the Times Union website of Governor Patterson talking about how New York’s high property taxes are causing people to move out of New York.

As a capital district resident I’d liike to be able to download these videos to listen to and watch on my iPod. Maybe that’s where they are headed next.

Soon you’ll be able to weigh in on this content and converse with them, stay tuned for something special we have in store!

I look forward to seeing more from the Times Union and if you’d like to learn how online video is effecting your business please give us a call at 518-320-2613.

Enjoy,
David

As an evaluator of web based tools for marketing and promotions I feel Mixpro is at the top of the game.

Mixpro really understand what is needed in the online advertising and marketing space and have created a great platform for filling that need.

Here is a demo video of their platform. Scroll down to see why I think it’s so great.

Why is this tool so great?

1. It is completely web based. Edit videos online and track results.

2. It is template based - they don’t require you to higher a high end graphics team.

3. It meets many of the requirements of a successful web 2.0 application: shareable, actionable, measureable tool that is cross-platform. They also promote providing value to customers, not just talking at them with promotional messages.

4. It meets the technical requirements of the user: adjusts for connection speed and enables photo, audio and video inputs.

5. No paper - an environmentally friendly solution.

They seem to have really thought of the their customers.

I look forward to learning more about their offering and sharing it with you.

Enjoy,
David

Conversation with Multi-cast service about their online video hosting

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

I just had an interesting conversation with Multi-cast about their Vidego service. Here are their responses to some of my questions. What questions would you ask?

Vidego offers Video on demand and Live video content delivery and interface solutions.

360 minutes a month of trans-coding, 5GB storage, 20GB data transfer  for $250 month.

Videogo will work with any other commerce and or adservers.

Can use authentication to reduce sharing of links.

Does have viral features - embed and email.

They charge for hosting, trans-coding, and bandwidth. Templates are included in the service that we can customize.

They do not provide RSS at this time.

Do they encode in any other formats? Not within Vidego.

They do have standalone trans-coding for other formats.

Does the video powerpoint sync feature come with it? Yes

Videogo does not support podcasting, separate service to host other media formats.

Does the player adjust for connection speeds? Yes, Akamai can deliver different bit rates available.

Live playing is another $250/month and requires a static IP and PC or Mac with Adobe encoder 2.5.

Their customers include: Adobe, AT&T and many other Fortune 500 name brands.

It seems like their niche is consistent high quality branded video content delivery for corporations that want a turn-key great looking solution.

I hope that was interesting and helpful for you. We’ll keep analyzing these providers to find the focus and niche each one fills.
