New media pick of the week - The world is flat at MIT

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I want ot be clearer than I have been. Our business at Word of Mobile is not about making audio or video presentations for websites, although that is a main aspect of what we do.

The true value in our consulting services is helping organizations adjust their whole communications methods and sometimes business models around the new paradigms of the 21st century.

Throughout this blog you’ll read my thoughts and hear from many world leaders on this topic.

I strongly feel that this presentation by Thomas Friedman does a great job explaining the need for our work. If you are too busy to listen to it now, click the download button below the player to save it to your computer and listen whenever you want.

You can check out Thomas’ books and other info here. It is important to note that his home page is a blog.

Here is a Youtube video promo of his latest project.

Here is our client Energy Saver Guy.com that is also helping with money and the environment.

A story of podcasting in education

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Educational efficiency - the speed and cost with which we change.

This is the reason I come to work everyday.

How does new media effect learning and change?

Here is a short excerpt and a link to one of my favorite educational organizations that provide fantastic podcasts about integrating technology and learning.

Excerpt -

Jenny’s next school podcast comes from her Arabic class. Again, the students in the class have put together a podcast, but this time they’re interviewing each other in Arabic about a guest speaker who visited their class last week.

This distinguished writer had just published an essay on international relations in the Arab-speaking world, and the current podcast includes excerpts from her presentation mixed with students asking each other about the significance of her ideas in relation to what they had learned so far about Arab culture. Although it is frustrating for the students to try to discuss complex concepts in fairly basic Arabic—this is a first-semester intermediate course—Jenny finds that her classmates’ struggles help focus her attention on one particular moment in the speaker’s lecture, one that is becoming more interesting the more she thinks about it. In addition, listening to her classmates gently correct each other’s vocabulary and pronunciation in the podcast reminds Jenny that a big test is coming up at the end of the week, and she makes a note in her to-do list.

If you’re wondering how podcasting can help your organization learn and change faster. Feel free to contact me.

Big Contact podcast player and sustainable business podcast

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Hey folks, if you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know I’m a big fan of using new media to educate in a more sustainable way.

Below is one of my favorite sustainable business podcasts. If you are interested in transitioning your company to a sustainable one, this podcast provides a great real world case study of Interface fabrics and their ongoing effort to become sustainable.

The podcast is also very neatly presented in this flash based audio podcast player by Big Contact.

Unfortunately, the code from big contact is not working in this Wordpress blog. Apparently another one of the web 2.0 growing pains. I expect to have the player in a future post.

From a new media consulting perspective this media is created almost perfectly. The host of the show, Doug Pilgrim, is honest, open and transparent. He knows the topic and provides great interviews with knowledgeable guests.

The podcast is not sponsored by the company but certainly is supported by the company and makes me want to buy!

Enjoy,
David

Time Union Newspaper leverages Online video to expand. Governor Patterson

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

The sometimes conservative capital of New York, Albany, is catching up to the national trend toward new media communications. Newspapers are now regularly producing online videos.

The Time Union is even using a high quality video sharing platform, Brightcove, which I have written about in previous posts.

Here is one of the videos from the Times Union website of Governor Patterson talking about how New York’s high property taxes are causing people to move out of New York.

As a capital district resident I’d liike to be able to download these videos to listen to and watch on my iPod. Maybe that’s where they are headed next.

Soon you’ll be able to weigh in on this content and converse with them, stay tuned for something special we have in store!

I look forward to seeing more from the Times Union and if you’d like to learn how online video is effecting your business please give us a call at 518-320-2613.

Enjoy,

Imagine creating TV like, web based, action oriented, video commercials, affordably

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

As an evaluator of web based tools for marketing and promotions I feel Mixpro is at the top of the game.

Mixpro really understand what is needed in the online advertising and marketing space and have created a great platform for filling that need.

Here is a demo video of their platform. Scroll down to see why I think it’s so great.

VideoAd by Mixpo

Why is this tool so great?

1. It is completely web based. Edit videos online and track results.

2. It is template based - they don’t require you to higher a high end graphics team.

3. It meets many of the requirements of a successful web 2.0 application: shareable, actionable, measureable tool that is cross-platform. They also promote providing value to customers, not just talking at them with promotional messages.

4. It meets the technical requirements of the user: adjusts for connection speed and enables photo, audio and video inputs.

5. No paper - an environmentally friendly solution.

They seem to have really thought of the their customers.

I look forward to learning more about their offering and sharing it with you.

Enjoy,
David

National publicity for local new media competition

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

The Capital District of New York is heating up with Web 2.0 and user generated content interest.

Here is a great example of a local new media strategy and the national publicity that can come with it.

I like that NBC allows me to embed this player in my blog. It is interesting they are running their own contest via mail in DVD or tapes, not a web based upload tool.

I’ll keep you posted on the results of the Huck Finn audience generated video contest, if they become available as shareable content on the web.

Is the advertising model of publishing information the only option in the new media free information age?

Evan Margolin from SalsaBootcamp.com is charging up to $37/month for his information published on the internet.

Here is a great article from Business 2.0 on how he does it.

Evan has created an online destination that includes frequently updated niche content as well as a sense of community around the content.

These aspects are key to every successful business strategy whether it is online or not.

Conversation with Multi-cast service about their online video hosting

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

I just had an interesting conversation with Multi-cast about their Vidego service. Here are their responses to some of my questions. What questions would you ask?

Vidego offers Video on demand and Live video content delivery and interface solutions.

360 minutes a month of trans-coding, 5GB storage, 20GB data transfer  for $250 month.

Videogo will work with any other commerce and or adservers.

Can use authentication to reduce sharing of links.

Does have viral features - embed and email.

They charge for hosting, trans-coding, and bandwidth. Templates are included in the service that we can customize.

They do not provide RSS at this time.

Do they encode in any other formats? Not within Vidego.

They do have standalone trans-coding for other formats.

Does the video powerpoint sync feature come with it? Yes

Videogo does not support podcasting, separate service to host other media formats.

Does the player adjust for connection speeds? Yes, Akamai can deliver different bit rates available.

Live playing is another $250/month and requires a static IP and PC or Mac with Adobe encoder 2.5.

Their customers include: Adobe, AT&T and many other Fortune 500 name brands.

It seems like their niche is consistent high quality branded video content delivery for corporations that want a turn-key great looking solution.

I hope that was interesting and helpful for you. We’ll keep analyzing these providers to find the focus and niche each one fills.
