New media pick of the week - The world is flat at MIT

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I want ot be clearer than I have been. Our business at Word of Mobile is not about making audio or video presentations for websites, although that is a main aspect of what we do.

The true value in our consulting services is helping organizations adjust their whole communications methods and sometimes business models around the new paradigms of the 21st century.

Throughout this blog you’ll read my thoughts and hear from many world leaders on this topic.

I strongly feel that this presentation by Thomas Friedman does a great job explaining the need for our work. If you are too busy to listen to it now, click the download button below the player to save it to your computer and listen whenever you want.

You can check out Thomas’ books and other info here. It is important to note that his home page is a blog.

Here is a Youtube video promo of his latest project.

Here is our client Energy Saver Guy.com that is also helping with money and the environment.

Big Contact podcast player and sustainable business podcast

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Hey folks, if you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know I’m a big fan of using new media to educate in a more sustainable way.

Below is one of my favorite sustainable business podcasts. If you are interested in transitioning your company to a sustainable one, this podcast provides a great real world case study of Interface fabrics and their ongoing effort to become sustainable.

The podcast is also very neatly presented in this flash based audio podcast player by Big Contact.

Unfortunately, the code from big contact is not working in this Wordpress blog. Apparently another one of the web 2.0 growing pains. I expect to have the player in a future post.

From a new media consulting perspective this media is created almost perfectly. The host of the show, Doug Pilgrim, is honest, open and transparent. He knows the topic and provides great interviews with knowledgeable guests.

The podcast is not sponsored by the company but certainly is supported by the company and makes me want to buy!

Enjoy,
David

Fora.Tv Really works when it comes to spreading the word

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

This is my second post about Fora.tv. I really like their media display interface. It is very viewer friendly and well thought out.

I can access specific parts or all of a video. I can download and share socially right from the clip.

Here is an example of a section of a longer clip, which makes for great viral media and overview content for people who are just being introduced to the topic and presenter.

Time Union Newspaper leverages Online video to expand. Governor Patterson

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

The sometimes conservative capital of New York, Albany, is catching up to the national trend toward new media communications. Newspapers are now regularly producing online videos.

The Time Union is even using a high quality video sharing platform, Brightcove, which I have written about in previous posts.

Here is one of the videos from the Times Union website of Governor Patterson talking about how New York’s high property taxes are causing people to move out of New York.

As a capital district resident I’d liike to be able to download these videos to listen to and watch on my iPod. Maybe that’s where they are headed next.

Soon you’ll be able to weigh in on this content and converse with them, stay tuned for something special we have in store!

I look forward to seeing more from the Times Union and if you’d like to learn how online video is effecting your business please give us a call at 518-320-2613.

Enjoy,
David

National publicity for local new media competition

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

The Capital District of New York is heating up with Web 2.0 and user generated content interest.

Here is a great example of a local new media strategy and the national publicity that can come with it.

I like that NBC allows me to embed this player in my blog. It is interesting they are running their own contest via mail in DVD or tapes, not a web based upload tool.

I’ll keep you posted on the results of the Huck Finn audience generated video contest, if they become available as shareable content on the web.

Is there a YouTube like service for thinking people?

Yes, There are at least 2. Fora.tv and TedTalks

Here is an interesting video from Fora.tv on how YouTube is effecting U.S. Politics and Global culture.

As a new media strategist, this is one of the best user interfaces/experiences I have seen anywhere.

Very social, share-able, flexible, and conversational.

I invite you to explore and learn more about Fora.tv and when you have questions contact me David at 518-320-2613 to understand how internet media is changing every aspect of marketing and communications.

A little help from my friends - Podcast Episode with Saratoga Chamber

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Hi folks, I’ll be doing a podcast interview next week with our local Chamber of Commerce.

In new media fashion I figured I would put out my ideas of what I should talk about and get your feedback.

Here is an example of the questions and answers I have suggested.

What do you think? Feel free to leave a comment.

Bio of Word of Mobile Tech Valley’s New Media Consulting Company.

Word of Mobile was formed in January 2006 to help Tech Valley and National companies make the profitable transition to the new media age.

We provide new media consulting and services in the form of market research, strategy design, implementation and proving out return on investment.

New media refers to online and mobile media produced, consumed and monetized by the masses not the mass media. It is communication by and for the people.

Companies need to communicate in ways that consumers relate to and new media is the way consumers relate in 2008 and going forward.

David, What is new media?

Well, Anna Maria that is a good question.

Currently there are:

112 million blogs

100 million views of videos on YouTube everyday

44,000 podcasts

Over 150 million registered MySpace users and over 70 million on Facebook.

84% of Americans have cell phones, sending and receiving billions of text messages every day.

All of this activitity is part of the new media landscape and represents consumer driven communitcations enabled by the new version of the world wide web we call web 2.0. In addition, virtually none of this activity existed just 5 years ago.

There are 2 primary pieces to the new media puzzle:

The first piece are the new mediums of blogs, podcasts, social networks and wikis for example.

These web based software tools are designed to imitate face to face style communication and therefore are changing the way we use the world wide web.

A wiki for instance can be used for group collaboration from any location, a podcast like the one we are recording now creates the ability for people to listen to our conversation from anywhere at anytime.

It is this time and space shifting principle that makes the Internet and portable media such powerful mediums.

The second piece of the new media puzzle is the way people are communicating. In the one-way mediums of mass media and first generation websites it made sense to put a ton of energy into getting the wording and presentation exactly right because change was infrequent and it was easy to stand out.

In today’s information packed world where things are changing fast it is harder to get someone’s attention. We help businesses communication adapt to reflect and be more effective in this new environment.

At word of Mobile we facilitate this change from impression based to relationship and value based communications.

What do you mean by the profitable transition to the new media age?

As consumers become more educated, because they have access to more information via the Internet, the past strategies of hiding information from your customers are no longer effective.

We work with companies to help them understand, profitable companies in the information based society in which we live are open, transparent and working with their customers in the new mediums.

We help our clients talk With their network instead of talking at them. When I say network I’m talking about customers, potential customers, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders.

Who can benefit from new media communication strategies?

Everyone benefits when we work together and communicate more effectively and openly.

Consumers get more straight forward answers and a sense of being heard by the companies that serve them. Companies get valuable feedback from customers and partners.

To more directly answer your question our clients are companies with 5 or more people and marketing budgets of $2-5,000 a month to put toward building stronger relationships with customers and the community.

Our current clients include CDTA, Gore mountain, and The Mortgage Network.

Any takeaways for our listeners today?

Yes, the best thing you can do in the next month to help profitably transition your your business to the new media age is read a book called Wikinomics - How Mass collaboration changes everything.

Where can our listeners learn more about Word of Mobile?

They can call us at 518-320-2613 or visit Word of Mobile.com for more helpful information, videos and podcasts.

Thank you for your time today.

Enjoy,

David
