Saratoga Springs Chamber of Commerce presentation question 2 - Web 2.0 quality, YouTube

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is post #2 in a series about the quality of free web 2.0 tools. The first post discussed Skype the free phone calling, video conferencing and instant messenging tool.

YouTube has the lowest quality video encoding (conversion to flash format for cross platform viewing) on the web. Who has the largest engaged participant base (users)? YouTube.

What is this audience worth? In 2006 YouTube was purchased by Google for $1.65 Billion in Google stock. (Source)

Corporations may choose to understand that quality is definately achieveable but not always the highest value placed on things from the consumer’s perspective and it is the focus on the consumer that wins business.

For example 100 million videos are watched on YouTube everyday by consumers. How many are corporate messages?

Why would corporation not use the most popular, free distribution and participation system in the world?

One simple solution to YouTube’s quality issue is using Google branded video hosting service. This service allows for unlimited bandwidth and file size (you can publish as long and big a video as you want).

Google video does not have as easy to use sharing features and participant comments. In order to send this video to a friend, click on the Google logo in the bottom right and go to the Google webpage where the video is hosted then you can access the email a friend or embed code features.

Here is a Google hosted video from one of our clients Capital District Transportation Authority, CDTA.

On the flip side Apple the premier quality technology company (in my opinion), can survive by charging 3 times as much as it’s competitiors for a similar product is doing quite well.

There is clearly a niche market who are willing to pay for quality above other values.

The time is right for corporations to catch up to consumers behaviors or be left behind.

You are not in this alone, we are here with the experience and team to help.

We look forward to your comments.

Saratoga Springs Chamber of Commerce presentation questions - video metrics

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

We had a great turn out and very engaged participants at our presentation yesterday morning at the Saratoga Springs Chamber of Commerce event. We appreciate Jenn and the Chamber providing the opportunity and resources for the gathering.

In the coming weeks we intend to write about some of the questions asked at the presentation that are frequently asked about new media, what it is, how to use it, what kind of results we can expect.

One question was about video metrics: Can we see how long a particular video was watched online?

There are 2 companies providing this data, both are start-ups and located within 200 miles of Saratoga Springs.

StreamMetrics is in Montreal and the other is to new to mention but is about to make a splash in the New media metrics space.

YouTube recently began offering metrics to publishers on it’s platform. YouTube is considered to be the leader in online video in terms of amount of content and amount of participation and views.

We look forward to your comments.

Entry Title - Blog Anatomy

Monday, February 25th, 2008

The title above is a summary of the entry. The title is what is seen first by viewers on the site, in search engine results and RSS feeds.

An entry consists of a Title, Post, Comments and Links.

Post - this is where the text, photos, audio and video show up in the entry.

Permalinks provide the permanent location of the entry.

Linkback links provide a way for authors to know who else is linking to their entries.

Usually one of the left or right columns is used for organizing the blog.

Organizational tools include:

Categories - to help readers easily find topics they are interested in and authors to easily organize their entries.

RSS Feed - Typically an icon or words that link to the RSS Feed of the blog.

Blogroll - List of other sites the author likes.

Tag cloud - Visual representation of the popularity of tags in the blog. The larger a word shows up in a tag cloud the more it is used in the blog.

i.e. a blog about education would likely have education be the largest word in the cloud where the word Atlanta would appear few times and therefore be smaller in the cloud.
